The NE or kNowledge Element is the building block for all maps in DNE Maps. The graphical objects that are connected together to form a map are all NEs. An NE is like a combination between a folder (it manages access to files), an object in a model (it can be related to other NEs in many different ways in order to represent practically any relation that you want) and a database object (you can edit and update meta-data on the fly for any NE).
NEs are composed of three parts:
In DNE maps, each NE can be represented by a different shape and graphic, which can provide information about what the NE does in the map. In the example here, the NEs are circles, squares and hexagons. However, any graphic can be used to represent any kind of object, depending what the map is to be used for. Graphics are set by the original map builder using the DNE.
Maps are always viewed context-sensitively. That is, one NE always appears as the central NE and, no matter what NEs are in the map as a whole, you see all and only the NEs that impact on or get impacted by the central NE. This means that at any stage in a process, you can see and access the stages that came before and the stages that came after. The central NE is always immediately above the fields area. In the example, it is the circle called Association.
You can tag NEs in your map with a red, yellow or green light:
Lights can be used to indicate anything, for instance:
