Subdocuments

A subdocument is a portion of a document. It can be a sentence or paragraph in a Microsoft® Word document, a set of cells in a spreadsheet, a slide in a slide show, a detail in an image, a sound bite in audio recording or a clip in a video recording.

Basically, a subdocument is a bookmark, but it's a bookmark enhanced with full DNE functionality. Like a regular bookmark, a subdocument is not a "new" file it is a shortcut to a particular passage in the existing file. Unlike a regular bookmark, a subdocument counts as a unique, independent tile in its own right. That means:

A subdocument can be opened directly. You don't have to open the source tile first and then find the bookmark,
A subdocument can be attached to any NE, regardless of where the source tile is located in the DNE,
A subdocument can be renamed to anything,
A subdocument can be given its own meta-data fields,
You can search directly for a subdocument, either by name or by fields,
A subdocument can be published or emailed to any other DNE, DNE Maps or DNE Desktop user.

Multimedia subdocuments are made in the DNE with our media editors, and can be made in any workroom.

Text subdocuments can be made in any of the following applications:

Microsoft® Word
Microsoft® Excel
Microsoft® PowerPoint®
Microsoft® Visio®

You can also create subdocument tiles that are screen shots of any of these application windows. Text subdocuments and screen captures are made with Add-In buttons that the DNE installs in these applications.

i_blueAdd-Ins are generally registered when the DNE is installed. If the Add-Ins are not installed (for instance, if you install Microsoft® Office after installing the DNE, then they can be registered at any time via DNE Utilities.
