The DNE manages your information by allowing you to relate NEs in four very different sets of relations. One of the ways of relating pieces of information is in a tree structure, as above. The tree structure is the simplest way to organize information and is the most common strategy for knowledge management (KM). The folder-file structure is a tree structure.

The cabinet works just like a regular tree, but has three unique advantages.
| • | First, because the DNE's information management system offers several integrated strategies, you do not have to force everything into a tree structure. Use different structures for different types of information. By picking and choosing among the strategies available you can build a repository ideally suited to the way you work. |
| • | Second, you can access your tree structure at twelve points at once. The ability to see and access more information means that you have more of the information you need at your fingertips. |
| • | Finally, you can save multiple configurations. If you are working on several different tasks, you can set the cabinet up differently for each task and you will always have all the information you need for any task, only a mouseclick away. |
